BRIGADIER GENERAL WRIGHT J. SHERRARD Brigadier General Wright J. Sherrard is deputy chief of staff for intelligence at North American Air Defense Command/Continental Air Defense Command, Ent Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colo. General Sherrard was born in Bienville, La., in 1917. After graduation from high school in Monroe, La., in 1936, he attended Northwestern State College, Natchitoches, La., for three and a half years prior to entry into military service. He completed flying training and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1941. He was assigned as a troop carrier unit commander and served in England, North Africa, Sicily and Italy from 1942 through 1943. He was assigned during the period of February 1944 through June 1945 as executive officer and then commander of Stout Army Air Base, Indianapolis, Ind. He was sent on temporary duty to U.S. Air Forces in Europe until November 1945 to participate in a staff study of the German Air Force. After returning to the United States, General Sherrard was an air instructor at the Infantry Center at Fort Benning, Ga., until December 1946. While at Fort Benning, General Sherrard completed the parachute training course and qualified as a parachutist. He has made 15 jumps. He then served as commander, 8th Troop Carrier Squadron at Bergstrom Field, Texas. In May 1947 he was assigned as airborne project officer at Lawson Field, Ga., and in July 1947 became commander of the 75th Troop Carrier Squadron at Greenville Air Force Base, S.C. He graduated from the Air Command and Staff School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and was subsequently assigned as operations staff officer at Headquarters Continental Air Command, Mitchel Air Force Base, N.Y., and moved with the Command headquarters to Ent Air Force Base, Colo. In 1952 General Sherrard completed a year of Russian language study at Syracuse University where he received a bachelor of arts degree. He served as air attache at the American Embassy in Moscow during the years 1953 and 1954. He became commander of the 7050th Air Intelligence Service Wing, Frankfurt, Germany, in 1955 and remained there until 1956. After returning to the United States he attended the National War College, Washington, D.C., and graduated in 1957. From 1957 to 1960, General Sherrard served in Headquarters U.S. Air Force, first on the staff of the director of targets, and later as director of warning and threat assessment, assistant chief of staff, intelligence. In August 1961 he was assigned as director of intelligence, Headquarters U.S. European Command, Paris, France. Upon return to the United States in August 1964, he became commander of the 552nd Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing, McClellan Air Force Base, Calif. He was named commander of the 551st Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing, Otis Air Force Base, Mass., in February 1966 and assumed his present duties as deputy chief of staff for intelligence, North American Air Defense Command and Continental Air Defense Command in July 1966. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart and the Parachutist Badge. (Current as of Oct. 1, 1968)
