BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN SERUR

Brig. Gen. John Serur is commander of the Defense Contract Administration Services Region, Los Angeles.

General Serur was born in 1937, in Austin, Texas, and graduated from San Marcos (Texas) High School in 1955. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Texas A&M College in 1959 and a master of arts degree from Central Michigan University in 1976. The general graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C., in 1976; and completed the Advanced Management program at the University of Virginia in 1982.

After receiving his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Texas A&M College in May 1959, General Serur's first assignment was as supply officer for the 779th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, Opheim Air Force Station, Mont. From February 1961 to March 1962, he served as chief of the Consolidated Base Equipment Management Office, 4684th Materiel Squadron, Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland. He was then assigned to the 84th Fighter Group, Spokane International Airport, Wash., as chief of the Equipment Control Branch. After coordinating the closure of the base in October 1963, he transferred to the 325th Fighter Wing, McChord Air Force Base, Wash., as the materiel control officer for maintenance. In October 1964 he became chief of the Aircraft and Electronic Supply Division, Headquarters 25th Air Division, also located at McChord Air Force Base.

In May 1965 the general was assigned to the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing, Royal Air Force Station Lakenheath, England, as chief of the Logistics Plans Division. Following the withdrawal of U.S. forces from France, he was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Paris, from March to December 1967, as deputy chief of field operations, Military Liquidation Section, where he coordinated the turnover of installations and facilities to the French government.

General Serur subsequently transferred to the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Materiel, Headquarters 7th Air Force, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, where he served as chief of the Airlift and Special Operations Branch. Upon his return to the United States in December 1968, the general was assigned to the Inspector General's Office, Headquarters 12th Air Force, Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas, as a logistics and mobility inspector. In February 1971 he transferred to the Directorate of Logistics Plans and Programs, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., and served on consecutive assignments as staff logistics officer and executive officer. General Serur then attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

Following graduation in June 1976, the general reported to the Ogden Air Logistics Center, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, as deputy system manager for F-4s and F-101s. In January 1977 he was selected to work with Dr. Fredrich Herzberg in establishing an Air Force Logistics Center pilot program on Orthodox Job Enrichment at Hill Air Force Base. He became chief of the Resources Management Division, Directorate of Materiel Management, in October 1977.

From July 1978 to February 1979, General Serur was assigned to the Air Force Section, Military Assistance and Advisory Group, Tehran, Iran, as chief logistics adviser to the Imperial Iranian air force. Following the Iranian revolution, in February 1979, he was evacuated to the United States and later served as Air Force Logistics Command's director of plans, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In May 1982 he attended the Advanced Management program at Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business, University of Virginia. The general became the director of materiel management, Sacramento Air Logistics Center, McClellan Air Force Base, Calif., in August 1982. He assumed his present duties in July 1984.

His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal.

He was promoted to brigadier general Sept. 1, 1984, with same date of rank.
