LIEUTENANT GENERAL CHARLES J. SEAROCK JR. Lieutenant General Charles J. Searock Jr. is vice commander, Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. AFMC researches, develops, tests, acquires and provides logistics support necessary to keep Air Force units and weapon systems in a state of readiness, and to sustain their operations in peace and war. The command manages these systems from their inception on the drawing board through their retirement from the inventory. This is done through 18 specialized centers. AFMC has approximately 125,000 military and civilian employees around the world. General Searock was born in 1936, in Easton, Pa., and graduated from Burbank (Calif.) High School in 1954. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in general education from the University of Nebraska in 1962 and a master's degree in management from Central Michigan University in 1975. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1963, Air Command and Staff College in 1973, and the Army War College in 1976. The general's military career began in 1954 as a member of the California National Guard. In July 1956 he entered active duty as an aviation cadet and graduated from pilot training school at Reese Air Force Base, Texas, in 1958. His first operational assignment was flying the KC-97 with the 9th Bombardment Wing (Strategic Air Command), Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho. In 1963 General Searock was transferred to the 306th Bombardment Wing, McCoy Air Force Base, Fla., where he served as a B-52D co-pilot, aircraft commander, instructor pilot and wing standardization and evaluation pilot. During this assignment he completed 152 B-52 combat missions in support of the defense of South Vietnam. Returning to the United States in 1969, he was assigned to Carswell Air Force Base, Texas, as an FB-111 cadre instructor pilot. From August 1971 to May 1974 General Searock served at Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., in the Strategic Operations Division, Directorate of Operations. Upon completion of that assignment in May 1974, he joined the White House military staff as assistant for plans to the military assistant to the president. In February 1976 he assumed command of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, 509th Bombardment Wing, Pease Air Force Base, N.H. There he also served as the 509th Organizational Maintenance Squadron commander, assistant deputy commander for maintenance, deputy commander for maintenance and vice wing commander. In June 1981 General Searock was assigned as commander, 380th Bombardment Wing, Plattsburgh Air Force Base, N.Y. He then was transferred to Headquarters U.S. European Command, Stuttgart-Vaihingen, West Germany, in June 1983, as executive officer to the deputy commander in chief. His first Air Force Logistics Command assignment, in June 1985, was as vice commander of the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center, Tinker Air Force Base, Okla. In June 1987 he became deputy chief of staff for logistics, Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb. He became vice commander, Headquarters Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, in June 1991, and assumed his current position in July 1992. The general is a command pilot with more than 7,000 flying hours. His military awards and decorations include the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal. He was promoted to lieutenant general June 1, 1991, with same date of rank. General Searock's hometown is Nazareth, Pa. (Current as of August 1992)
