MAJOR GENERAL RICHARD M. PASCOE

Major General Richard M. Pascoe is commander of the U.S. Air Force Air Defense Weapons Center, Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.

General Pascoe was born in Roseville, Mich., and graduated from Helix Union High School, La Mesa, Calif., in 1952. He completed Air War College in 1972.

He entered the Air Force in August 1952 and served two years as a B-36 and B-29 radio and electronics countermeasures operator, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. In July 1955 the general entered pilot training as an aviation cadet at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He continued his pilot training at Bryan Air Force Base, Texas, and upon graduation as a distinguished student in October 1956, was commissioned as a second lieutenant. In 1957 he completed advanced flying and gunnery training at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz., and Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., flying F-86s and F-100s, respectively.

His first operational assignment was with the 32nd Fighter Squadron at Soesterberg Air Base, Netherlands, where he flew F-100s and F-102s from June 1957 to May 1961. The general then served as an F-100 pilot and command post duty officer for the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing, England Air Force Base, La.

From January 1963 to September 1965 General Pascoe was assigned to Headquarters 9th Air Force at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., as an operations inspector. After F-4 combat flying training, he transferred to the 33rd Tactical Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., as an F-4 pilot and flight examiner. In December 1966 he was assigned to the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, where he flew 125 combat missions, 95 over North Vietnam. He is credited with shooting down two MiG fighters.

Upon his return to the United States in July 1967, General Pascoe was assigned to Headquarters Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., as the Tactical Air Command's liaison officer. In June 1969 he transferred to Headquarters Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Base, Va., as an air operations staff officer in the Fighter Deployments Branch.

The general graduated from Air War College in May 1972. In September 1972 he completed the Defense Systems Management Course at the Naval Postgraduate School. He then was assigned to the U.S. Air Force Advisory Group in Thailand as chief of the Tactical Operations Advisory Division until May 1974. General Pascoe then transferred to the 56th Special Operations Wing at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, as assistant deputy commander for operations.

In June 1975 General Pascoe returned to the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing, which had relocated to Torrejon Air Base, Spain. He served first as assistant deputy commander for operations, then became deputy commander for operations in July 1976. A year later he was appointed wing vice commander.

The general was assigned to Ramstein Air Base, West Germany, in July 1978 and served as director of tactical fighter operations, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe. He transferred to Zaragoza Air Base, Spain, in June 1979, as commander of the 406th Tactical Fighter Training Wing and remained there until April 1981. He then became commander of the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing at Royal Air Force Station Bentwaters, England. In September 1982 he was assigned as commander of the Northwest Aerospace Defense Region and the 25th Air Division, McChord Air Force Base, Wash. The general returned to Ramstein in September 1984 as chief of staff, U.S. Air Forces in Europe. In September 1986 he was named commander of 17th Air Force, Sembach Air Base, West Germany. He assumed his present command in May 1988.

General Pascoe is a command pilot with more than 4,800 flying hours, including 338 combat hours in Southeast Asia. His military decorations and awards include the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 10 oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.

He was promoted to major general June 1, 1985, with date of rank June 1, 1981.
