LIEUTENANT GENERAL DONALD G. NUNN

Lt. Gen. Donald G. Nunn is the inspector general of the U.S. Air Force. He is responsible to the secretary of the Air Force and the chief of staff for the optimum effectiveness of the U.S. Air Force inspection, safety, law enforcement, security, investigative, counterintelligence and complaint programs, to insure that Air Force resources are effectively and efficiently managed for the sustainment of the Air Force peacekeeping and fighting capability.

General Nunn was born in 1918, in St. Paul, Minn., where he graduated from Central High School, in 1936, and received a bachelor of arts degree from Hamline University, in 1940. He is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff School, 1951, and the Armed Forces Staff College, 1960.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in March 1942, and graduated from Officer Candidate School with a commission as second lieutenant in December 1942. During World War II, he served in the European Theater of Operations with the Ninth Air Force and was released from active military duty in April 1946. He returned to Minnesota where he was a mink rancher.

During the Korean War, General Nunn was recalled to active duty in February 1951 as comptroller for the 3565th Pilot Training Wing at James Connally Air Force Base, Texas. He later became director of the budget at Headquarters Flying Training Air Force.

In May 1955 General Nunn was transferred to the Military Assistance Advisory Group, Taiwan, and was appointed budget adviser to the Ministry of National Defense, Republic of China.

He was assigned in June 1957 to the Air Materiel Command and became chief of accounting and finance at Middletown Air Materiel Area, Olmsted Air Force Base Pa. in August 1959 he entered the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va. He was subsequently assigned as chief, Accounting and Finance Division at San Antonio Air Materiel Area, Kelly Air Force Base, Texas.

In September 1960 General Nunn joined the Ballistic Missile Center at Los Angeles, Calif., as chief of the Financial Management Division. From April 1961 to July 1965, he served with the Ballistic Systems Division at Norton Air Force Base, Calif., as chief, Programming Division, and became deputy comptroller.

General Nunn became comptroller, Headquarters Electronic Systems Division (AFSC), L.G. Hanscom Field, Mass., in July 1965. He was assigned to the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Organization at Los Angeles Air Force Station, Calif., in July 1967, as assistant for management, and became chief of staff in October 1968. He was appointed commander, Air Force Contract Management Division, Air Force Systems Command, with headquarters at Los Angeles Air Force Station, Calif., in July 1970, and moved with the headquarters to Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., in August 1972.

He was appointed the inspector general of the U.S. Air Force in September 1974.

His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the Army Commendation Medal.

He was promoted to the grade of lieutenant general effective Sept. 1, 1974, with same date of rank.
