BRIGADIER GENERAL GLYNNE M. JONES

Glynne Morgan Jones was born in 1903, in Belize, British Honduras and was naturalized on Oct. 28, l927.

From 1920 to 1927 General Jones was employed by the Louisiana Highway Commission, and the following nine years operated and was a flying instructor at the Lafayette and Bogalusa Flying School in Louisiana. Commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Reserve on Jan. 31, l934, he served six months with the Civilian Conservation Corps at Ashland, Ala. From 1937 to 1940 the general was a senior aeronautical inspector with the Aeronautics Branch of the Department of Commerce at Washington, D.C., and the following year served as general manager of the New Orleans Airport, La. Appointed a captain of Air Corps in the National Guard April 25, l94l, he was promoted to major Sept. 4, 194l.

That Oct. 1, General Jones was assigned to active duty as commanding officer of the l22nd Observation Squadron at Essler Field, La., becoming executive officer of the 68th Observation Group at New Orleans, La., in December.

Going to England in 1942, General Jones became assistant chief of staff for operations of the Eighth Air Force Service Command, assuming that position with the Troop Carrier Command in North Africa in April 1943 and later moving in that capacity to the Mediterranean Theater. Transferred to the Ninth Troop Transport Command in England the following March in that capacity, he moved with it to France in January 1945. That August the general was named assistant chief of staff for operations of the Eighth Air Force Base Unit.

Returning to the United States in December l945, General Jones served as assistant chief of staff for operations of the Ninth Troop Carrier Command at Stout Field, Ind., until released from active duty in May 1946.

The following year General Jones was civil aeronautics adviser to the Office of the Military Government of the United States in Germany. Receiving a Regular commission in June 1947, he remained there as chief of the Civil Aviation Branch, Armed Forces Division, and the following April was named chief of the civil aviation section in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations at Air Force headquarters.

Joining the Tactical Air Command in June 1951, General Jones assumed duties as chief of staff of the 18th Air Force at Donaldson Air Force Base, S.C., becoming deputy commander of the 18th the following May. Commanding the 63rd Troop Carrier Wing, TAC, at Altus Air Force Base, Okla., in December 1952, he later took it to Donaldson Air Force Base, S.C. He assumed additional duty as commanding general of the 64th Troop Carrier Wing there in October 1953, and was relieved the following March. On March 1, 1955 General Jones was designated deputy chief of staff of Exercise Sage Brush at Langley Air Force Base, Va.

Going overseas on July 1, 1956, General Jones was appointed deputy commander, Fifth Allied Tactical Air Force, with headquarters at Vicenza, Italy.

His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal, French Legion of Honor and Croix de Guerre with palm. He is rated a senior pilot and technical observer.
