BRIGADIER GENERAL HARLEY SANFORD JONES

Harley Sanford Jones was born at Fox Lake, Wis., in 1902. He graduated from Ripon College, Wis., with a bachelor of philosophy degree in 1926. Commissioned a second lieutenant in the Organized Reserve Corps at Fort Sheridan, Ill., that July, in September 1940 he transferred to the Air Corps.

Assigned to the Central Procurement District at Detroit, Mich., that December, General Jones served as the Air Force procurement representative at the Studebaker, Packard and Ford Willow Run plants for the next four years, and then served in that capacity at the Boeing Aircraft plant in Seattle, Wash. Joining the Far East Air Force at Tokyo, Japan, in July 1947, General Jones served as chief of supply until October 1949.

The following January General Jones transferred to the Air Materiel Command, and was Air Force plant representative at the Boeing aircraft plant in Wichita, Kan., and on July 15, 1951, he was appointed chairman of the B-47 production committee. Assuming command of the Northeast Air Procurement District, AMC, at Boston, Mass., in October 1952, the following March he was named deputy for production in the Directorate of Procurement and Production, Air Materiel Command.
