BRIGADIER GENERAL MALCOLM P. HOOKER

Brigadier General Malcolm P. Hooker is the assistant commander of the Military Traffic Management and Terminal Service, Washington, D.C.

General Hooker was born in 1920, in Memphis, Tenn., where he completed Central High School. He attended Southwestern University for two years and law school for one year. He received a direct commission into the U.S. Army Air Corps in June 1942.

During World War II in July 1942, he was assigned to the Air Transport Command of Romulus, Mich., and while there he was pilot and later director of Air Training for the 3d Fighter Group. In May 1944 he was transferred to Africa and saw service as chief pilot of the Central African Division of Air Transport Command. He returned to the United States in April 1945 and saw duty as a flight commander, completed student pursuit training, and was director of operations at several air bases. He was relieved from active military service in November 1945.

In September 1948 he was recalled to active duty for service during the Berlin Airlift and was chief of Flight Operations Section, San Antonio Air Materiel Area, Randolph Field, Texas. In April 1949 he went to Rhein-Main Air Base, Germany, as assistant project officer for the Berlin Airlift with the 1st Airlift Task Force. He became deputy operations officer and later director of operations for the 61st Troop Carrier Wing.

General Hooker was transferred in May 1952 to the 435th Troop Carrier Wing at Miami International Airport, Fla., as operations and training officer and later was commander, 456th Troop Carrier Group, flying C-119 aircraft. He served as assistant director of operations and training for the Eighteenth Air Force at Donaldson Air Force Base, S.C., from August 1953 to August 1955. He then entered the Air Command and Staff School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.

In July 1956 he was transferred to Headquarters U.S. Air Force where he was section chief and deputy division chief in the Transport Forces Division of the Directorate of Operations. In August 1960 General Hooker became assistant deputy for operations and later was deputy chief of staff for operations, 315th Air Division at Tachikawa, Japan. He returned to the United States in August 1963 to attend the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.

General Hooker joined Headquarters Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Base, Va., in June 1964, as chief, Airlift Operations Division and later was assistant director of airlift, in the Directorate of Operations. He went to Southeast Asia in April 1967 and assumed duties as assistant director of operations and later was director of operations for the 834th Air Division at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, with responsibility for the extensive airlift conducted within that theater of operations.

General Hooker returned to Langley Air Force Base, Va., in May 1968 and became commander of the 316th Tactical Airlift Wing in August 1968. He assumed duties as assistant commander, Military Traffic Management and Terminal Service, Washington, D.C., in August 1971.

His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation Emblem, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon. He is a command pilot.

He was promoted to the temporary grade of brigadier general effective April 1, 1971, with date of rank March 20, 1971.
