MAJOR GENERAL JAMES W. HOPP

Major General James W. Hopp is director of supply, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. The directorate is responsible for developing the U.S. Air Force supply and fuels policy as well as the logistics program justification to obtain the resources necessary to support the Air Force mission. He coordinates and manages these resources in addition to justifying and defending logistics resource requests to the Air Force leadership, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Office of Management and Budget, and Congress.

General Hopp was born in 1941, in Dallas. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from St. Mary of the Plains College in 1963, and master's degrees in systems management in 1969 and business administration in 1970, both from the University of Southern California. The general completed Squadron Officer School in 1965, Air Command and Staff College in 1974, National War College in 1979 and the Harvard University Senior Defense Managers Program in 1984.

After three years of enlisted service in the Navy Reserve, the general entered active duty in the Air Force in February 1963 and was assigned to Officer Training School, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Upon graduation he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. In May 1963 he was assigned as a supply officer with the 775th Radar Squadron, Cambria Air Force Station, Calif. In March 1966 he transferred to the 4683rd Air Base Group, Thule Air Base, Greenland, as chief of the Management and Procedures Branch. In March 1967 he became maintenance support officer with the 78th Supply Squadron, Hamilton Air Force Base, Calif.

From February 1970 to August 1973 General Hopp was chief of the Supply Plans Branch, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. After graduating from Air Command and Staff College in July 1974, he was assigned first as chief of supply, then as commander of the 56th Supply Squadron, Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand.

General Hopp returned to the United States in August 1975 as chief of the Bomber and Cargo Aircraft Branch, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics Operations, Headquarters Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. From May 1976 to July 1978 he was executive to the commander of Air Force Logistics Command.

Upon graduation from National War College in June 1979, he became chief of the International Logistics Branch, Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C. In November 1981 he transferred to the Defense Fuel Supply Center, Cameron Station, Va., as vice commander. General Hopp returned to Air Force Logistics Command headquarters in August 1983 as director of command initiatives, and as the assistant deputy chief of staff for plans and programs. In September 1985 he was appointed vice commander of Sacramento Air Logistics Center, McClellan Air Force Base, Calif.

In July 1987 General Hopp was assigned as deputy chief of staff for communication-computer systems, Air Force Logistics Command headquarters, and commander, Logistics Management Systems Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He then became commander of the Ogden Air Logistics Center, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, in November 1988. In October 1990 he became director of logistics programs, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Engineering, Air Force headquarters. Due to the headquarters reorganization, he assumed his present position in February 1991.

The general's military awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with "V" device and oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

He was promoted to major general Aug. 1, 1988, with same date of rank.
