BRIGADIER GENERAL JOSEPH K. GLENN

Brigadier General Joseph K. Glenn is director of special programs, Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Washington, D.C.

General Glenn was born in 1935, in Rapid City, S.D., and graduated from Little Rock (Ark.) Central High School. He earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Washington University in 1959. The general completed Squadron Officer School in 1966, Air Command and Staff College in 1973 and the National Security Management School in 1977. He also completed the Aerospace Research Pilot School in 1969 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology program for senior executives in 1985.

Upon graduation in June 1959 the general was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program. He entered pilot training at Graham Air Force Base, Fla., and received his pilot wings at Laredo Air Force Base, Texas, in May 1961. He then was assigned to the 509th Bombardment Wing, Pease Air Force Base, N.H., as a B-47 pilot.

In 1965 General Glenn moved to Pope Air Force Base, N.C., where he flew C-130s. In July 1967 he transferred to Ching Chuan Kang Air Base, Taiwan, and flew C-130s providing tactical airlift and combat support in the Republic of Vietnam.

He entered the Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., in June 1968, and upon graduation, was assigned to the Directorate of Flight Test (later designated 4950th Test Wing), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, as a flight test officer. He participated in numerous test projects, including the Zero "G" program, RC-135U, Air Force satellite communications, and other system developments.

The general was assigned to the A-10 System Program Office at Aeronautical Systems Division as test manager in August 1972. In May 1975 he joined the Air Force Directorate of Development and Production, Washington, D.C., as an A-10 program element monitor. In 1980 he continued his work in the Air Staff as a research and development staff officer, and managed special studies for the deputy chief of staff for research and development.

In February 1982 General Glenn returned to Aeronautical Systems Division as chief of the Advanced Bomber Concepts Office. From June 1983 to July 1985 he served as commander of Aeronautical Systems Division's 4950th Test Wing, where he supervised the development and test evaluation activities of a diverse flying activity and major modification facility. He then was assigned as deputy commander for reconnaissance/strike and electronic warfare systems. He assumed his current duties in February 1987.

The general is a command pilot with more than 4,700 flying hours in 30 types of aircraft. His military decorations and awards include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal.

He was promoted to brigadier general Nov. 1, 1987, with same date of rank.
