BRIGADIER GENERAL WILLIAM R. GOADE

Brigadier General William R. Goade is commander, 1035th Technical Operations Group, and director, Air Force Technical Applications Center, Patrick Air Force Base, Fla.

General Goade was born in 1922, in St. Louis, Mo. He began his military career in 1938 with the Missouri National Guard and enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1942 as an aviation cadet. He received his pilot wings at Pampa Army Air Base in October 1943 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps.

He attended B-26 transition training and in January 1944 was assigned in the European Theater of Operations, as a pilot with the 386th Bombardment Group. He flew 62 bombing missions in B-26 aircraft against targets in France, the Low Countries and Germany.

He returned to the United States and from July 1945 until April 1949 performed duty as an instructor pilot, flying safety officer, and assistant director of training at flying training bases in Texas and Arizona. He graduated from the Air Tactical School at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., in August 1949, and then served a tour of duty with Headquarters Air Training Command.

In April 1951 he completed training in the triple rating program of navigator, bombardier, and pilot at the navigator school at Ellington Air Force Base, Texas, and began a 12-year tour of duty with the Strategic Air Command. He was assigned to the 301st Bombardment Wing at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., where he served successively as squadron operations officer, squadron commander, and deputy director of operations. In June 1957 he was assigned to Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., and became chief of the Future Plans Section under the Operations Plans Division. In 1960 he was chief of the Operations Planning Team involved in the development of the U.S. Single Integrated Operations Plan.

From June 1961 to August 1963 General Goade was on duty at Madrid, Spain, as chief of the Operations Plans Division, Sixteenth Air Force, with headquarters at Torrejon Air Base. He returned to the United States for duty with Headquarters U.S. Air Force, in the Pentagon, as chief of Special Weapons Branch, under the Deputy Director of Plans for War Plans, Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Operations. In June 1966 he was graduated from the National War College, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C.

He next went to Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, as deputy commander for operations of the 3646th Pilot Training Wing and in March 1967 became commander of the wing.

General Goade went to Turkey in July 1969 and assumed duties as chief, Air Force Section, Joint Military Mission for Aid to Turkey at Ankara, Turkey.

General Goade became commander, 1035th USAF Field Activities Group and Director, Air Force Technical Applications Center, Alexandria, Va., in October 1971. These organizations were transferred to Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., in 1972 and the group was redesignated the 1035th Technical Operations Group.

His military decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 11 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Unit Citation Emblem, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon, and Small Arms Marksmanship Ribbon. He is a command pilot with the additional rating of observer and has approximately 6,000 hours flying time, including 1,500 instructor hours and more than 2,500 hours of jet aircraft time.

He was promoted to the temporary grade of brigadier general effective Aug. 1, 1969, with date of rank July 16, 1969.
