BRIGADIER GENERAL DAVID B. ENGLUND

Brigadier General David B. Englund is vice commander, Ballistic Missile Office, Air Force Systems Command, Norton Air Force Base, Calif. He also serves as program director for the new small ICBM.

General Englund was born in 1937, in Alexandria, Minn. He graduated from Park Rapids (Minn.) High School in 1955. He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, where he was also commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program. He has a master of science degree from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., and is a graduate of Squadron Officer School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.; Naval War College School of Command and Staff, Newport, R.I.; and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C.

In December 1960 General Englund entered basic navigator training at James Connally Air Force Base, Texas. He subsequently received navigator bombardier training at Mather Air Force Base, Calif., and then served as a navigator bombardier in B-47s at Rickenbacker (formerly Lockbourne) Air Force Base, Ohio, and Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, from December 1962 to December 1964.

He entered undergraduate pilot training in January 1965. He received his pilot wings in February 1966 and was assigned to the deputy for flight test, Aeronautical Systems Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. While there he served as a project pilot and test manager for research and development programs in support of the Eastern and Western Test Ranges, Air Force Laboratories and System Program Offices. General Englund was assigned to the 9th Special Operations Squadron, Da Nang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, from April 1967 to April 1968, where he flew 840 combat hours as an 0-2 pilot. After completion of his tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam, he returned to the deputy for flight test at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

In July 1969 General Englund was assigned to the Naval War College. Following graduation in June 1970, he returned to Aeronautical Systems Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as assistant for special projects and in October 1973, he became the system program director for the advanced medium short take-off and landing transport. He entered the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in July 1976 and following graduation in June 1977, General Englund again returned to the Aeronautical Systems Division as deputy system program director, F- 15 System Program Office, until July 1978 when he became acting system program director. From December 1978 to October 1982, he served as special assistant to the commander, and was the director of low observables at Aeronautical Systems Division. In October 1982 the general was assigned as deputy director of development and production, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Research, Development and Acquisition, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. He assumed his present duties in July 1984.

The general is a command pilot with more than 3,500 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.

He was promoted to brigadier general Aug. 1, 1984, with same date of rank.
