MAJOR GENERAL GROVER CLEVELAND BROWN

Major General Grover Cleveland Brown is assistant director for intelligence production, Defense Intelligence Agency. He directs and supervises the production of finished intelligence in support of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Military Departments, and other designated national and international agenc1ies.

General Brown was born in Jefferson County, Miss., in 1912. He graduated from Fayette High School at Fayette, Miss., attended the University of Mississippi, and graduated from Texas University in 1935 with a bachelor of arts degree. After a period of civilian employment, he entered the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet in June 1930. He completed flying training and received his commission as a second lieutenant and his pilot wings at Kelly Field, San Antonio, Texas, in 1940.

During the fall of 1940 General Brown helped organize the first Army Air Forces twin-engine pilot training school at Barksdale Field, La., where until June 1942 he served successively as training operations officer, squadron commander and assistant school operations officer.

In 1942 he was transferred to the newly activated B-26 organization, the 4th Bombardment Wing, which was a unit under the command of Brigadier General James R. Doolittle. He flew the first B-26 aircraft of the 4th Wing to England in September 1942 and remained with the B-26 force in the European Theater of Operations until May 1945. During this time he served first as an operations staff officer of the wing, then as commander of the 322nd Bomb Group; chief of staff of the 98th Bombardment Wing; and finally as commander of the 387th Bombardment Group from July 1944 until May 1945.

General Brown returned to the United States in May 1945 to duty in the Pentagon with the assistant chief of staff, intelligence, Army Air Forces. After three years duty in the Pentagon, he was assigned for five years at the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., as a student and later as a faculty member and deputy academic director. In July 1953 he went to Japan and served as an intelligence officer with Headquarters Far East Air Forces, Tokyo, and later as commanding officer of the 4th Fighter Wing, at Chitose Air Base, Hokkaido, Japan.

From September 1956 until July 1959 he served with the Department of the Air Force, first on the staff and later as director of the Directorate of Targets, Assistant Chief of Staff Intelligence. In July 1959 he became air attache to the United Kingdom in London, England. General Brown departed London in July 1962 for an assignment as commander of the Seattle Air Defense Sector, McChord Air Force Base, Wash. In July 1964 he assumed the position of assistant chief of staff, intelligence, Pacific Command.

General Brown became assistant director for intelligence production, Defense Intelligence Agency, in April 1967.

His decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster and French Croix de Guerre with Palm.
