Brigadier General MALCOLM F. BOLTON

Brigadier General Malcolm F. Bolton is assistant deputy chief of staff, plans, Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va.

Genera Bolton was born in Houston in 1939, and graduated from Pasadena (Texas) High School in 1957. He received a bachelor of science degree from Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College, College Station, in 1961 and a master of science degree in management from Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, in 1973. The general graduated from Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in 1974 and the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa., in 1978.

After receiving his commission as a second lieutenant through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program, General Bolton served as a B-52 maintenance officer with the 4245th Strategic Bombardment Wing at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, from November 1961 to December 1962. He then entered pilot training at Webb Air Force Base, Texas, and completed fighter-interceptor training at Perrin Air Force Base, Texas, in 1964. Upon completion of follow-on F-101 interceptor training at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., in September 1964, General Bolton reported to his first operational assignment, flying F-101B's with the 13th Fighter-interceptor Squadron at Glasgow Air Force Base, Mont.

From April 1966 to February 1967, he flew RF-101s with the 45th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. Upon returning to the United States, he was assigned as an interceptor pilot with the 62nd Fighter-interceptor Squadron at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Mich. The general was then selected to be aide-de-camp to the 10th Air Force commander at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Mo., from March 1968 to March 1970. He then transferred to the Air Force Plant Representative's Office at the General Dynamics Corporation, Fort Worth, Texas, as an F-111 acceptance pilot and later became the plant representative's manager for the YF-16 program.

Following completion of Air Command and Staff College in June 1974, General Bolton joined the 429th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, as operations officer. In May 1975 he reported to the 430th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., and served as commander of the F-111-equipped squadron, from March 1976 to June 1977.

In June 1978, after graduation from the Army War College, General Bolton was assigned to the Pentagon as chief of the Tactical Fighter Division, Assistant Chief of Staff, Studies and Analyses. He transferred to Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., in January 1981 as vice commander of the 58th Tactical Training Wing and became commander of the wing in June 1981. He assumed his present duties in June 1983.

The general is a command pilot with more than 3,800 flying hours, and 168 combat missions. He has flown F-4s, F-16s, F-l0ls, F-102s, F-104s, F-ll1s, RF-10ls, and T-39s. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with 13 oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal.

He assumed the grade of brigadier general Dec. 3, 1984.
