Major General WALTER ROBERTSON AGEE

Maj. Gen. Walter Robertson Agee was born in Silver City, N.M., in 1905. In 1923 he graduated from New Mexico State Teachers College High School in Silver City and in 1925 graduated from New Mexico Military Institute. Roswell, N.M.

Entering Flying school in Texas, he was commissioned at Kelly Field, Texas in 1928. Today he is a command pilot, a celestial navigator, and a combat observer with close to 6,000 flying hours.

Second Lieutenant Agee's early assignments included Armament Officers School and Navigation School. Later he served in various squadron assignments in Texas, Virginia, California, and the Philippines, and prior to World War II served as a flight commander and squadron commander in Hickam Field, Hawaii.

Graduating from the Air Corps Tactical School, Maxwell Field, Ala., in 1940, Captain Agee served as a Group S-4, 7th Bomb Group at Hamilton Field, Calif., and moved with the Group to Fort Douglas, Utah. He then was wing executive Officer, 20th Bomb Wing (Heavy) at Fort Douglas and moved from there to Fort George Wright, Wash., where he became executive and operations officer for the II Bomber Command. In 1942 he became assistant chief of staff operations, then the deputy chief of staff of the Headquarters 2nd Air Force in Spokane, Wash., and later the commander of the 16th Bomb Operational Training Wing, El Paso, Texas, and Tucson, Ariz. In the fall of 1943 Colonel Agee became chief tactical inspector, Headquarters 2nd Air Force at Colorado Springs, Colo., and subsequently air inspector, Headquarters 3rd Air Force, Tampa, Fla.

After serving as the commander of the 89th Combat Crew Training Wing in Tampa, Fla., he became the deputy assistant chief of staff, A-3 of Headquarters U.S. Army Strategic Air Forces, Guam, and later became the deputy chief of staff, Headquarters Pacific Air Command, U.S. Army (Rear) on Guam.

While on Guam, General Agee was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star Medal. The citation for the Legion of Merit read in part, "During this critical period of transition from war to peace the problems of readjustment of personnel, of training, and re-training personnel, and the regrouping elements of the command to meet its new mission were matters of the greatest urgency and importance. General Agee, because of his broad experience in administration and training, was able to relieve both the assistant chief of staff, A-3, and the chief of staff of a large share of their responsibilities and thereby allow them to devote their efforts to the solution of the new problems facing the command."

The Bronze Star Medal citation read in part, "Brigadier General Agee entered Headquarters, U.S. Army Strategic Air Forces at a crucial period in the war against Japan. It was a period which required strong direction and clear-cut action. He worked day and night to coordinate the efforts of the A-3 divisions of Headquarters, USASTAF, and assumed the great burden of the myriad details that arose and thus enabled the assistant chief of staff A-3 to concentrate on broad policies."

After serving as chief of staff for the 5th Air Force in Japan in 1946-47, he became chief of the Air Counter Intelligence Division, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. After various intelligence assignments in Washington he became commander of the 39 Air Depot Wing, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska in 1951, and later became the deputy commander of Alaskan Air Command.

In 1955, Major General Agee became vice commander of the Headquarters Civil Air Patrol-U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C. and in January 1956, became commander of this organization, the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force.
