BRIGADIER GENERAL JAMES F. SMITH

Brig. Gen. James F. Smith is the mobilization assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Plans and Programs, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. He assists in developing, integrating, evaluating and analyzing the Air Force's long range plans and the five-year, $604 billion U.S. Air Force Future Years Defense Program to support national security objectives and military strategy.

General Smith was commissioned in 1982 through the University of Virginia ROTC program. His active-duty and Reserve assignments have included numerous wing, major command and headquarters comptroller and strategic planning positions as well as various initiatives for Secretary of the Air Force Reserve Affairs and Secretary of the Air Force Acquisition. He also served as the Air Force Reserve representative for the 2001 Quadrennial Defense Review.

General Smith deployed for five months as the senior military adviser to the Commander, Stabilization Force, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was also the senior Air Force officer in Bosnia and the Commander, Detachment 1, 401st Air Expeditionary Wing. As a civilian, he is a partner with a Chicago law firm of more than 110 attorneys.
