MAJOR GENERAL STUART L. SCHROEDER

Maj. Gen. Stuart L. Schroeder is mobilization assistant to the commander, 15th Air Force, Strategic Air Command, March Air Force Base, Calif.

Maj. Gen. Schroeder was born in Sheridan, Wyoming. He attended the University of Wyoming from 1951 to 1953, and then the University of Northern Colorado, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1955. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1958, Air Command and Staff College in 1975 and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1977. The general has also completed the Air Force Budget Officers Course and the combined Air Warfare Course. He has attended the Armed Forces Staff College Seminar and the Reserve Senior Officer Professional Military Education Course.

He was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program. The general graduated from pilot training at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, in July 1957. His first assignment was to the 320th Air Refueling Squadron, March Air Force Base, where he flew KC-97 aerial tankers. He transitioned to KC-135s in 1960 and was assigned to the 922nd Air Refueling Squadron at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, before transferring to the 305th Air Refueling Squadron at Grissom Air Force Base, Indiana.

He separated from active duty in August 1965 and in November of that year joined the Illinois Air National Guard. He was assigned to the 198th Air Refueling Squadron under Tactical Air Command at O’Hare International Airport, Chicago, where he became an instructor on the KC-97L. In 1968 he transferred to the California Air National Guard and flew C-97s in the 195th Military Airlift Squadron.

In 1970 Gen. Maj. Schroeder joined the Air Force Reserve as a Civil Air Patrol liaison officer in the 9004th Reserve Squadron, and in 1972 became an individual mobilization augmentee assigned to the Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service. He transferred to the Western Rescue Coordination Center, 42nd Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, Hamilton Air Force Base, California, for training. The Rescue Coordination Center then moved to McClellan Air Force Base, California, and in 1974 was centralized at Headquarters Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service, Scott Air Force Base, Illonois.

He remained with the Rescue Coordination Center until July 1976, when he became the mobilization assistant to the vice commander of Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service. In September 1981 he was selected to become mobilization assistant to the commander of Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service. With the consolidation of Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service and special operations that resulted in the creation of the 23rd Air Force, the general became mobilization assistant to the commander, 23rd Air Force, Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, in March 1983. He assumed his present position in July 1985.

Maj. Gen. Schroeder is a command pilot with more than 4,000 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Coast Guard Unit Commendation with Operational Distinguishing Device, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with five oak leaf clusters, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with hourglass device.

In his civilian capacity Maj. Gen. Schroeder is a pilot employed by Trans World Airlines.

His civic affiliations include the Reserve Officers Association, Air Force Association, Jolly Green Giants Association, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and Chamber of Commerce.

He was promoted to major general May 29, 1987, with the same date of rank.
