BRIGADIER GENERAL WILLIAM M. SHAW JR.

Brigadier General William M. Shaw Jr. is deputy chief of staff for engineering and services, Headquarters Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

General Shaw was born in 1934, in Asheville, N.C., where he graduated from high school in 1951. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering and received his commission through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program. The general received a master of science degree in engineering from St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas, in 1973 and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas. His service schools include Squadron Officer School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.; Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va.; and Air War College, also at Maxwell. In addition, he is a graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces by correspondence.

He entered the U.S. Air Force in September 1955 and completed navigator training at Harlingen Air Force Base, Texas, in 1957. His first operational assignment was as a line navigator in C-124s with the 28th Logistics Support Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. He was released from active duty in September 1958 but recalled in 1959 as a line navigator and then as an instructor navigator flying C-124s at Dover Air Force Base, Del., with the 1607th Air Transport Wing.

In March 1961 he was assigned to the 50th Air Transport Squadron at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, as an instructor, flight examiner and later the squadron standardization and evaluation officer. Elements of the squadron were used to make up the 1st Provisional Squadron at Clark Air Base, Philippines, whose mission was to fly the first in-country shuttle to the Republic of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, from 1961 to 1964.

The general become an assistant professor of aerospace studies at Rutgers University in June 1964, and in January 1965 was assigned to Andrews Air Force Base, Md., flying with the Special Air Mission Squadron, 1001st Air Base Group. In February 1965 he become chief of industrial engineering in the 1001st Civil Engineering Squadron at Andrews Air Force Base. He then became director of operations and maintenance and in October 1967 was named chief of programs for the squadron.

General Shaw went to Osan Air Base, South Korea, in August 1968 as chief of operations for the 557th Civil Engineering Squadron (rapid engineer deployable, heavy operations repair squadron, engineer) and later became the deputy commander.

Upon his return from South Korea in January 1970, he attended the Armed Forces Staff College. He then began a four-year tour of duty at Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, as chief of programs in the Civil Engineering Division and later was assistant to the base civil engineer. During this tour of duty, General Shaw received a master's degree from St. Mary's University through the Air Force Institute of Technology.

From July 1974 to July 1976, the general returned to Hill Air Force Base as the base civil engineer with the Ogden Air Logistics Center. After graduating from the Air War College in June 1977, he was selected as director of operations and maintenance and later as assistant to the deputy chief of staff for engineering and services at Air Force Logistics Command headquarters. In July 1980 General Shaw took command of the Air Force Logistics Command's Logistics Support Group located at Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. The general was responsible for all foreign military sales programs for the Saudi air force, including the management of operations and maintenance training for F-5s and F-15s in Saudi Arabia.

Following his return from Saudi Arabia in October 1981, General Shaw was named vice commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, Robins Air Force Base, Ga. He assumed his present duties in January 1983.

General Shaw is a master navigator with 5,200 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters and Purple Heart.

He was promoted to brigadier general June 1, 1982, with date of rank Oct. 1, 1981.
