|
Maj. Gen H.D. Polumbo Jr. is the Commander, 9th Air and Space Expeditionary Task Force- Afghanistan; Deputy Commander-Air, U.S. Forces-Afghanistan; and Deputy Chief of Staff-Air, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command. He oversees three air expeditionary air wings and three expeditionary groups consisting of more than 4,500 Airmen directly engaged in combat operations; and he advises and assists with joint expeditionary tasked/individual augmentee taskings in the Afghanistan combined joint operating area. Additionally, the general serves as the Central Command Coalition Force Air Component Commander's personal representative to the Commander of Headquarters ISAF as well as the Deputy Commander-Air to the Commander U.S. Forces-Afghanistan, ensuring the optimal integration of air and space power in support of Headquarters ISAF and Operation Enduring Freedom missions.
General Polumbo entered active duty in 1981 as a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. He has served in a variety of positions including weapons officer and operations officer, and commanded at the squadron, group and three times at the wing level. General Polumbo served in a joint position on the staff at Headquarters Allied Air Forces Northwestern Europe, NATO, and as the Assistant Deputy Director for Global Operations on the Joint Staff. He completed a year-long deployment as Commander of the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility where he also led planning and deployment of the first U.S. Army Patriot Battalion on his base in the area of responsibility. During this command tour, General Polumbo also spearheaded U.S. Naval Forces Central standup of the first operational employment of the new Navy Broad Area Maritime Surveillance system using the maritime version of the RQ-4A Global Hawk. General Polumbo recently completed duty in United States Africa Command where he served as the Director J5 Strategy, Plans and Programs and later as the Chief of Staff.
The general is a command pilot with 4,000 flying hours in all blocks of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, including combat sorties in Operation Northern Watch. He also holds the distinction as the first Air Force general officer to fly the U-2S in combat and completed 21 operational U-2 missions in operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. The General is now a combat mission ready pilot in the MC-12W weapon system.
