The Korean War buildup in the early 1950’s was the first major test to training at Lackland. With the war beginning in June 1950, the draft started and BMT experienced a surge of new trainees. At the time, Lackland could only accommodate a load of around 20,000 people with a permanent party of 5,000, however by mid-1951, 84,000 people were on the base – turning it into a tent city.

P-51D, title "Dago Red" by Willie Jones, Jr., is a World War II fighter plane highly modified for air racing.  This P-51D Mustang had major modifications made to its engine wings, canopy and cockpit area.  The modifications boosted the planned max speed from 437 MPH to over 500 MPH.  Dago Red set the world speed record for the 15 KM course topping over 517 miles per hour.This image is copyrighted and is the property of Willie Jones Jr. and is available only to members of the Armed Forces and Military organizations.

POW/MIA Poster.  Poster provided by the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office.  Observances of National POW/MIA Recognition Day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and veterans' facilities. This observance is one of six days throughout the year that Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families' POW/MIA flag. The others are Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day. The flag is to be flown at major military installations, national cemeteries, all post offices, VA medical facilities, the World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the official offices of the secretaries of state, defense and veterans affairs, the director of the selective service system and the White House. P-51 Nooky-Booky IV, 8x10 inches @ 300 ppi.  Art provided by Jason Breidenbach.  The P-51 Nooky-Booky IV was the forth P-51 flown by Major Leonard "Kit" Carson.  He was the Top scorer of the 357th Fighter Group with 18.5 victories with an additional 3.5 more by strafing.  Most of his victories were in the last six months of the war flying this aircraft.
