Two Air Force installations and one Air Force archaeologist are winners of Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards for 2002.

Representatives from Hill Air Force Base, Utah, and Tinker AFB, Okla., along with Karlene Leeper of the 611th Air Support Group at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, will receive their awards during a Pentagon ceremony May 7.

Tinker AFB claimed the Environmental Quality Award for an industrial installation, recognizing base efforts to protect human health and the environment by achieving full and sustained compliance with all applicable environmental requirements.

Hill took top honors for the Environmental Restoration Award. The award is given to installations demonstrating exceptional efforts to protect human health and the environment by cleaning up identified sites, in a timely, cost-efficient and responsive manner.

Leeper won the Cultural Resources Management Award. The award recognizes an individual's efforts to promote the management of cultural resources, including historical buildings, archaeological sites, American Indian items and sites, and the cultural resources conservation ethic. She was recognized for her efforts in cooperating with the Bureau of Indian Affairs for cemetery protection during a sensitive restoration project.
