The last day to submit an essay for the Air Force High Flyin' BBQ Challenge is April 18.

The competition is open to all active-duty Airmen and sister services members at Air Force-led joint bases in the contiguous United States who think their barbecue is the best in town and want to prove their barbecue prowess.

"The Air Force BBQ Challenge has been very well received," said Scott Black, the Air Force Personnel Center special project officer. "We've received both written essays and video submissions from Air Force installations across the United States. Many Airmen are looking forward to showing off their talents."

Applicants must submit an essay to AFHighFlyingBBQ@MyAirForceLife.com explaining in 500 words or less why they believe their barbecue skills are the best in the Air Force. Essays must be submitted in Arial, 12-point font and be double-spaced. Entries should include a photo of the BBQ product that best captures the style and presentation of the applicant's BBQ skills.

The Air Force Personnel Center's directorate of services is also accepting video applications. Videos must be less than two minutes long and uploaded to YouTube. Applicants must ensure they include their full name, name of their installation, email address and link to the video.

The top two entries from each of the three geographic regions will earn the chance to compete in an officially sanctioned local barbecue competition this summer.

AFPC will announce the winners April 25, and those winners will be automatically entered to compete in local competitions slated for May 23 through Aug. 23.

Regional competitions will be held at sanctioned events throughout the United States. The top three winners from the regional events will win a trip to the Air Force barbecue finals in September.

"The finalists will compete during the San Antonio Stock and Rodeo Show's Fall Fest, held in September," Black said. "All participants will receive a commemorative gift for participating and additional prizes will be awarded to winners of the regional and grand final competitions."
