Senior Airman Shelby Horn poses for a portrait with her daughter Sadie Three pounds, 11 ounces of resiliency
In 2016 my husband and I found out I was pregnant with our second child and we were ecstatic. We had just bought our first home and the age gap between our first and second child would be three years, our "ideal" age gap. It was another girl, which is exactly what we were hoping for. We decided to name her Sadie Jean, after my husband's grandma. We were so excited for her to complete our family. We anxiously awaited her arrival, which was estimated as December 29, 2016.

Default Air Force Logo Let's have a cup of coffee
Regardless of your profession, many of us have been in positions defining the required leadership and management qualifications as an expectation of our ability to execute our office. But like many things, no two are alike and not one will prevail without the help of another.

It was a frigid day in January on a quiet hillside cemetery just north of New Market, Iowa. Surrounded by friends and family, we bid farewell to my grandmother. As we departed on those dusty gravel roads, I remembered my childhood and how she’d had such a profound impact on my life.

Default Air Force Logo Leading by innovation and efficiencies in a new era of fiscal change
On Sept. 11, 2001, just before the Twin Towers were destroyed by terrorists, I signed into the orderly room of the 314th Logistics Readiness Squadron (Provisional) at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., as a shiny new second lieutenant. While my four years of ROTC courses had prepared me for the immediate challenges of my first few months in the Air Force, it could not prepare me for the new era that would be thrust upon the U.S. and the world.

Default Air Force Logo Scandal has lessons for Airmen
Last week, Jonathan Martin, an offensive lineman on the Miami Dolphins football team, walked out and quit the team due to a perceived hostile work environment, allegedly characterized by demeaning, racially-biased communications and financial extortion by at least one team captain, and other senior members of the team. Though a lot of details are yet unknown, the events thus far are sufficient to provide a lesson for our own military community.

Default Air Force Logo Care for others but care for yourself
April 4, 2008, my sister awoke for the last time to a world that had not always treated her with kindness. We were two weeks shy of her 31st birthday, and six weeks shy of a family wedding ... my wedding. April 4 would be the last day I would see her. It would be the last day her six sons would see her. In the wake of what had become a lifetime of tragedies, she left home with a couple bottles of pills, drove to a nearby farm and called her oldest son to give him a consolation goodbye. "I have nothing left to give," she told him. There, alone in the dark, she fell to sleep for the last time.
