A gunner’s tale: 100th Bomb Group veteran shares memories of war

Former Staff Sgt. Lewis Herron, top left, poses with the rest of his crew from the “Heaven Sent” B-17 Flying Fortress while stationed with the 100th Bombardment Group at Royal Air Force Thorpe Abbots, England, during 1944 and 1945. To this day, the 100th Air Refueling Wing’s KC-135 Stratotankers still carry the square D designation on their tails, in honor of their heritage with the 100th BG.
