The Air Force Public Affairs Agency is a field operating agency with its headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.
Mission
The mission of the Air Force Public Affairs Agency is to provide Airmen with unique public affairs resources to document and convey the Air Force mission and legacy. AFPAA's vision is to be the primary innovators of public affairs capabilities supporting global operations. AFPAA's role is to provide the Air Force with an agile and responsive public affairs capability, including combat camera and visual information services. This capability includes the agency's media center, which archives and distributes Air Force imagery. AFPAA provides policy and oversight for the Air Force's online presence through Social Media and Public Web divisions, and the organization runs the service's only full-time Trademark and Licensing office, protecting official Air Force symbols.
Organization
AFPAA is led by a civilian director and an active-duty Air Force deputy. The headquarters element consists of three directorates: Director of Staff, Public Communication and Field Operations. Additionally, AFPAA is accountable for four Operating Locations and three active-duty Combat Camera Squadrons. The Director of Staff directorate has seven divisions, including Assessments, Financial Management, IT Support, Knowledge Operations, Logistics, Maintenance Management and Personnel and Training. Public Communication includes Trademark and Licensing, Public Web, Social Media and Band Support. Field Operations leads the Media Center, Policy and Plans and Training divisions.
The agency provides administrative and logistical support to four field offices across the United States. These include a command information branch at the Pentagon; Public Affairs assignment managers at the Air Force Personnel Center, Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas; the Air Force Media Engagement Office in New York City; and the Air Force Entertainment Liaison Office in Los Angeles.
The three active duty Combat Camera Squadrons are located at Joint Base Charleston, S.C.; Hill AFB, Utah; and Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.
Combined, these offices and units encompass representatives from all specialties within the Public Affairs career field, and are charged with a multitude of public affairs responsibilities including: providing imagery documentation of Air Force warfighter and humanitarian relief missions; audiovisual production support; assisting with news coverage about Air Force-level topics, policy and leadership; trademark and licensing; social media; public web management; and arranging music for Air Force regional bands around the world. AFPAA also provides career-field support through the development of training curricula and requirements for the Air Force's nearly 6,000 public affairs practitioners.
History
AFPAA traces its roots to June 1, 1978, with the activation of the Air Force Service Information and News Center. AFSINC was redesignated as the Air Force News Center April 1, 1990, and became a field operating agency Feb. 5, 1991. It was redesignated to the Air Force News Agency Aug. 1, 1991, before its redesignation to AFPAA Oct. 1, 2008. AFPAA achieved full operational capability June 3, 2013.
