7/18/2011 - RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS) -- Air Force Research Laboratory officials in Rome, N.Y., have implemented the single-staffing-tool civilian hiring process used to fill civilian positions at most Air Force bases.

Under the single staffing system, civilian vacancy announcements for appropriated fund positions are available for viewing on the Air Force civilian careers website www.afciviliancareers.com, and at www.usajobs.gov.

Luke AFB, Ariz.; Hurlburt Field, Fla.; Arnold AFB, Tenn.; Brooks City Base, Texas; Edwards AFB, Calif.; Eglin AFB, Fla.; Hill AFB, Utah; Kirtland AFB, N.M; Tinker AFB, Okla.; Robins AFB, Ga.; and Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, employees still use the legacy system on the AFPC website to self-nominate for positions, but applicants interested in positions at other installations, including Rome, must create and submit a resume through USAJobs to apply for vacancies.

According to Air Force civilian service marketing specialist Pat Stokes, the single staffing tool improves the application and hiring process for internal and external applicants.

Career briefs, which are used under the legacy system, contain cryptic codes that are sometimes difficult for supervisors to decipher, Stokes said.

"The resume requirement levels the playing field, enabling internal applicants to provide information that a career brief may not have included, and that makes them more competitive," Stokes said.

Candidates new to the USAJobs-based application process will find a helpful resume coach on the www.afciviliancareers.com and www.usajobs.gov websites, Stokes said. The installation Airman and family readiness center also offers resume-building assistance.
