6/27/2006 - SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for June 27.

In Afghanistan June 26, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s provided close-air support to coalition forces taking small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from Taliban extremists near Gereshk. The A-10s conducted strafing passes expending cannon rounds, ending the engagement.

A-10s, a B-1 Lancer and a French Mirage M2000 and F-1 also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Ghazni. A-10s also supported troops near Oruzgan.

Additionally, five Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 26 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Iskandariyah.

Additionally, 13 Air Force, Navy and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Navy fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 56 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

On June 25, Air Force rescue and medical crews on an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter flew one medical evacuation mission in support of OEF. An Afghan national army military member with injuries requiring urgent care was evacuated.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 150 airlift sorties, delivered 480 tons of cargo and transported 1,975 passengers. This included more than 51,000 pounds of troop resupply airdropped in southern and eastern Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Japan flew in support of either OIF or OEF.

On June 25, U.S., French and Royal Air Force tankers flew 43 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.6 million pounds of fuel.
