EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- A B-52 Stratofortress takes off from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., on a flight to test its new avionics system. The new system is part of the B-52 Avionics Midlife Improvement program. Flight tests began in December and will run through March 2004. DJIBOUTI, Africa -- Master Sgt. Terry Butterfield, a production superintendent, Staff Sgt. Laurence Shaw, a crew chief and Staff Sgt. Francisco Casimirlewis, a sheet metal craftsman from the 16th Helicopter Maintenance Squadron, examine a buckle in the metal frame of a MH-53 helicopter prior to takeoff to perform a mission on Jan. 14, 2003. The 16th HMXS works 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week. The average workday is 12 hours to include mission planning, washing, re-fueling, inspecting, repairing, and servicing all systems of the MH-53 helicopters to maintain mission readiness. Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa service members are deployed to Camp Lemonier here to combat terrorism in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. KEY WEST, Fla. -- A crew chief from the 159th Air National Guard, LA maintenance crew preflights a F-15 fighter jet on Oct. 23, 2002 for Exercise Cope Snapper 2002. Held at NAS Key West Florida, Exercise Cope Snapper 02 is a multi-aircraft exercise that engages dissimilar air combat training with on fighter data link and joint operations with the Navy. The members involved in Cope Snapper consist of the 159th Fighter Wing's, Louisiana F-15 fighters, the 169th McEntire, SC Air National Guard's F-16 fighter jets, maintenance crews, and the Navy's F-18s and F-14 fighter jets.
