Purple Heart presentation
WASHINGTON -- World War II veteran John Martinez was presented a Purple Heart on May 28 at the World War II Memorial here more than 59 years after his A-20 attack bomber crashed near Rhiems, France, causing a paralyzing spinal-cord injury. Freedom ride
HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- Motorcyclists from the Sentinels of Freedom, Hurlburt Field's motorcycle club, ride out the gate here on their way to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington to honor all those who paid the ultimate price for freedom. THORPE ABBOTTS, England -- In honor of the historic World War II bomb group, Maj. Anthony Gatlin leaves a Square D patch in a cache hidden here by Maj. Randall Ashmore. The patch was the World War II tail flash insignia used on nearby Royal Air Force Mildenhall's KC-135 Stratotankers. WASHINGTON -- The World War II Memorial is nestled between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument on the National Mall here. Names of each U.S. state, territory and the District of Columbia are inscribed on marble pillars in the order that they entered the Union. Chief Toogood was a supply specialist in the Pacific during World War II, and he retired from the Air Force after a 24-year career.
