Gaston blows through Charleston
CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AFPN) -- Tropical Storm Gaston hit here Aug. 29 causing minor damage and power outages. The outages began at 9 a.m. and all power was restored by 7 p.m. No aircraft were on the base when the storm hit. Most were supporting airlift missions worldwide, but 20 aircraft moved to MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., one to New Orleans and one to Navy North Island, Calif. CSAF hands out revised Airman's Manual
ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Md. -- Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John P. Jumper has distributed the first of more than 675,000 copies of the revised Air Force Manual 10-100, Airman's Manual. A copy will be given to each active-duty, Reserve and Guard Airmen. The new version is weatherproof, tear-resistant and fits in the battle dress uniform's cargo pockets. It combines the old manual with Air Force Handbook 32-4014, Volume 4, "USAF Ability to Survive and Operate Procedures in a Nuclear, Biologocal and Chemical Environment." Hurricane Charley
OVER FLORIDA -- Between penetrations of Hurricane Charley's eye in a C-130H aircraft, Lt. Col. Roy Deatherage discusses weather issues with 2nd Lt. Eileen Govan. Colonel Deatherage is a weather instructor, and Lieutenant Govan is a flight meteorologist. Both Airmen are assigned to the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, better known as the "Hurricane Hunters." The squadron is based at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., and provides surveillance of tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and Central Pacific for the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
