SECAF declares new complex officially open
SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) --
Secretary of the Air Force Michael W. Wynne took part in the grand-opening ceremony Feb. 5 of the Blatchford-Preston Complex, a $106.9 million construction project including improved recreational facilities and the bases' first permanent dormitories, in Southwest Asia.
Opening the Blatchford-Preston complex, completed as a joint project between the U.S. and the host government, marked a unique, historically significant event for both nations, said Brig. Gen. Charles W. Lyon, the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing commander.
The wing hosted the secretary and Lt. Gen. Gary L. North, the 9th Air Force and U.S. Central Command Air Forces commander. Also in attendance were the U.S. and host nation military, government and business leaders.
"It's great to be here today, under one sky, working together for peace and prosperity," Secretary Wynne said. "We appreciate all the (government here) has done to make this happen."
He also spoke about the economic development here and how U.S. forces help provide stability to the host nation and the region.
General North, in his remarks, focused not only on appreciation to the host nation, but also on, "two great American Airmen who fought for their country, Master Sgt. Samuel Nathan Blatchford and Gen. Maurice A. Preston."
Both men served in the 379th Bombardment Group during World War II, Sergeant Blatchford was as a B-17 radio operator whose aircraft was shot down on four occasions. General Preston began his military career in 1938 and took command of the 379th Bombardment Group in 1943. He flew 45 combat missions in the B-17 Flying Fortress and participated in the 1944 Schweinfurt attacks.
"It's fitting to name this facility after two Airmen whose courage and integrity set an example for all," he said. "We strive to match their deeds and excellence as we fly, fight and win."
Along with new dormitories, the complex boasts a community mall, including a new base exchange, food court and game room, as well as a state-of-the-art fitness center. After declaring the complex officially ready for use, the Secretary was given a tour of the new facilities and presented dorm keys to the most junior new residents.
Winning the war on terrorism is the ultimate goal here, Secretary Wynne said. Providing quality facilities like this these aid the mission by improving quality of life for the war fighter.
"(We're) thinking about our future vision as well as the present," Secretary Wynne said. "We will continue to operate the mission here for a long time. There will be many more opportunities to provide presence and stability here."
The U.S. Air Force first deployed to this region 17 years ago, and Secretary Wynne said he thinks they'll be among the last to leave. According to General North, Airmen are prepared to see this mission to its completion.
"We look toward a bright horizon," he said. "Like (Sergeant) Blatchford and (General) Preston, the Airmen who enter here will never falter and will never fail."
