Air Force sneaks past Montana, 4-3, in men's tennis
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AFPN) --
The Air Force men's tennis team captured victories at the top three singles positions and top two doubles spots April 4, defeating the University of Montana, 4-3, in the Falcons' final home match of the season. Air Force, currently on a three-match winning streak, is now 12-8 this season.
Junior Tyler McClung and sophomore Shannon Buck improved to 17-5 overall and 15-4 at the No. 1 doubles spot with an 8-5 victory over Gus Treyz and Stuart Wing. Sophomore Trevor Johnson and freshman Sky Jensen won the No. 2 match 8-2 over Montana’s Ryan O'Neill and Varun Giri. Montana took the No. 3 match, as Jan Steenekamp and Sean Stewart defeated the Air Force duo of junior Chris Dong and freshman Justin Lau, 8-3.
In singles action, Buck won his ninth consecutive match and improved to 26-4 overall and 18-2 at the No. 1 position with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Steenekamp. Johnson, who has a four-match winning streak, defeated O'Neill, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 and is 18-11 overall and 9-6 at the No. 2 position. McClung clinched the match for the Falcons with an easy 6-1, 6-2 decision over Wing at the No. 3 position.
Montana won the remaining three singles matches as Giri defeated Dong at the No. 4 spot when Dong retired in the second set. Treyz beat Lau in three sets at No. 5, 6-3, 6-7, 10-4, while Stewart beat Jensen, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 6 slot.
Air Force begins play in the Mountain West Conference on April 9 against the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. Air Force also plays San Diego State on April 10 and University of Nevada, Las Vegas, on April 11 in Albuquerque.
