Hispanic Heritage Month: NCO earns awards for war effort

Staff Sgt. Joanna Vasquez receives a LATINA Style Award Sept. 5 in Washington, D.C., for her actions in Iraq last year. An improvised explosive devise struck a Humvee behind the vehicle she was in, eventually killing four Soldiers providing security escort. Sergeant Vasquez used her combat lifesaver training to try and save the life of a wounded Soldier. She also used her Arabic language skills to question local Iraqis on whom may have place the IED. Sergeant Vasquez is assigned to the 31st Intelligence Squadron at Fort Gordon, Ga. (U.S. Air Force photo)
