BRIGADIER GENERAL GRANT R. SMITH Brigadier General Grant R. Smith is executive director, Quality Assurance, Contract Administration Services, Defense Supply Agency, Cameron Station, Alexandria, Va. General Smith was born in San Francisco, Calif., in 1920. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor of arts degree in 1948, earned a master's degree in economics from the University of Oregon in 1954, and a master's degree in international relations from The George Washington University in 1969. He received his pilot wings and commission as second lieutenant in July 1942 through the aviation cadet program and received his Regular Air Force commission in 1958. During World War II in July 1942, he went to the Pacific area where he served with the 18th Fighter Group at Guadalcanal and completed a combat tour of duty in P-40 aircraft. In January 1944 he returned to the United States and in April 1944 went to the European Theater of Operations where he completed a combat tour of duty in P-51 aircraft with the 325th Fighter Group. He is credited with destroying two Japanese Zeros and one German ME-109 aircraft in aerial combat. He was released from active duty in 1946 and returned to civilian life as a student and accountant and a member of the reserve. General Smith was recalled to active duty in August 1951 and served for three years as a professor of air science and tactics in the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps program at the University of Oregon. This was followed by a one-year tour of duty as an air adviser to the 6146th Flying Training Group, Republic of Korea Air Force, Seoul. In May 1956 General Smith assumed command of the 469th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, 355th Fighter Group, at McGhee Tyson Airport, Tenn., and later was appointed commander of the 354th Fighter Interceptor Squadron there. From December 1957 to July 1958, he served at Griffiss Air Force Base, N.Y., as commander of the 27th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. General Smith studied industrial production and procurement at the Boeing Company in Seattle, Wash., under the Air Force Institute of Technology Training with Industry Program, from July 1958 to September 1959. He served at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, with the Air Materiel Command, as deputy director for procurement and production in the F-105 System Program Office from September 1959 to June 1963. He next was transferred to Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, where he commanded the 44th Tactical Fighter Squadron until May 1964 when he became deputy commander of operations of the 18th Tactical Fighter Wing. From April 1965 to August 1965, he was on a temporary tour of duty in Southeast Asia as director of operations of the 6234th Tactical Fighter Wing and flew 51 missions over North Vietnam in F-105 aircraft. In June 1966 General Smith was reassigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Operations, as a staff operations officer in the Directorate of Operations, and in January 1967 became executive officer to the director of operations. In July 1968 he entered the National War College, Washington, D.C. After graduation in December 1969, he completed the F-111 operational training course at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. In January 1970 he was transferred to Royal Air Force Station Upper Heyford, England, and assumed duties as commander, 20th Tactical Fighter Wing, in April 1970. He delivered the first F-111E to the U.S. Air Forces in Europe in September 1970. General Smith served as chief of the Air Force Section of the Joint U.S. Military Mission for Aid to Turkey, in Ankara, from June 1971 to July 1973. He was assigned as deputy commander, 22nd North American Air Defense Command/Continental Air Defense Command Region with headquarters at North Bay, Ontario Canada, in July 1973. General Smith was transferred to Contract Administration Services of the Defense Supply Agency at Cameron Station, Alexandria, Va., in August 1974, as executive director production, and in November 1974 became executive director, Quality Assurance. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with 14 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon. General Smith's hometown is San Francisco, Calif. He was promoted to the grade of brigadier general effective Oct. 1, 1971, with date of rank Sept. 20, 1971. (Current as of Feb. 1, 1975)
