CHAPLAIN (MAJOR GENERAL) JOHN P. MCDONOUGH Chaplain (Major General) John P. McDonough (McDun-ah) is chief of chaplains, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. As a member of the special staff of the chief of staff, he advises on all matters that pertain to the religious and moral welfare of Air Force personnel. He is also responsible for establishing an effective total chaplain program that will meet the religious needs of all members of the Air Force. Chaplain McDonough was born in 1928, in Boston and graduated from Boston College High School. He earned a bachelor of philosophy degree from St. John's Seminary in 1952. The chaplain completed Air Command and Staff College in 1975. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Boston Jan. 10, 1952, and served as a curate in various parishes from January 1952 to May 1963. Chaplain McDonough entered active military service in May 1963 as a Catholic chaplain with the 3201st Air Base Group, Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. He transferred to the 4683rd Air Base Group, Thule Air Base, Greenland, in April 1965 and served as Catholic chaplain until May 1966, when he became the senior Catholic chaplain at the 437th Air Base Group, Charleston Air Force Base, S.C. In February 1968 he transferred to the 6918th Security Squadron, Hakata Administration Annex, Japan, where he served as base Catholic chaplain. Upon his return to the United States in March 1970, he was assigned to George Air Force Base, Calif., as assistant base chaplain. He remained there until July 1972, when he was assigned to the 7101st Air Base Wing, Wiesbaden Air Base, West Germany, as Catholic chaplain. He transferred to Hahn Air Base, West Germany, in April 1973 as the assistant installation chaplain for the 50th Combat Support Group. From August 1974 to June 1975 he was a student at the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and after graduation became the Catholic chaplain for the 1st Composite Support Group, Andrews Air Force Base, Md. From January 1976 to June 1978 Chaplain McDonough was the Catholic chaplain of the 1100th Air Base Wing, Bolling Air Force Base, D.C. He then became a plans and programs officer in the Professional Division at Air Force headquarters. In July 1982 he returned to Europe as the command chaplain, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Ramstein Air Base, West Germany. The general served as command chaplain at Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va., from August 1984 to December 1985, when he became deputy chief of chaplains. He assumed his present position in December 1988. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.
