Major General Jamie Gough is chief, Military Assistance Advisory Group, Germany, Mehlem, Germany.
General Gough was born in Chicago, Ill., in 1917. He attended elementary and high school in Dallas, Texas, and graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1939 with a bachelor of arts degree in the social sciences. He immediately enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet, and received his pilot wings at Kelly Field, Texas, in 1940.
His first assignments were as flying instructor and then supervisor at Kelly Field, where he remained until the end of 1942. Next assigned to Pampa Army Air Field, Texas, he assisted in organizing and opening the field as a two engine advanced flying school, occupying positions of director of flying and assistant director of training.
In December 1943 he was assigned to the 308th Bombardment Group, Fourteenth Air Force in China. He commanded one of the group's squadrons, the 425th, stationed at Kunming, until the fall of 1944 at which time he became group operations officer. Upon return to the United States in 1945 he was assigned to Headquarters Central Flying Training Command at Randolph Field, Texas.
In 1948 General Gough completed Air Command and Staff School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and was assigned to Headquarters Air Training Command at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., where he performed staff duties in the Plans and Flying Training sections until January 1951 when he became assistant for programming in the headquarters.
He attended the Air War College from July 1951 to May 1952 and was then assigned to the Far East as deputy commander of the 315th Troop Carrier Wing at Brady Air Field, Kyushu, Japan. Shortly thereafter, he was reassigned to Headquarters 315th Air Division, (Combat Cargo) as deputy for operations. In 1954 he assumed duties as commander, 483d Troop Carrier Wing at Ashiya Air Base, Japan.
General Gough returned to the United States in September 1955 to become deputy for operations, Eighteenth Air Force, with headquarters at Donaldson Air Force Base, S.C. In August 1957, as a result of reorganization within Tactical Air Command, General Gough was transferred to Headquarters Ninth Air Force at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., along with the reassignment of the troop carrier wings to Ninth Air Force. He was assistant deputy chief of staff for operations until July 1, 1958 when he became the deputy chief of staff for operations.
The general was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force as deputy director of operations in June 1960 and later became director of operations. In March 1963 he was appointed by the secretary of defense to be the U.S. Air Force steering and coordinating member of the Permanent Joint Board on Defense, Canada-United States.
General Gough was then assigned to the U.S. Strike Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., where he served as director of plans. He commanded Joint Task Force Ozark in Exercise Gold Fire I held in Missouri and the U.S. Joint Task Force Exercise Deep Furrow. He became deputy chief of staff, operations, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces, Europe, in December 1965, and assumed duties as chief, Military Assistance Advisory Group, Germany, in September 1967.
He is a command pilot with more than 6,000 hours and his military decorations include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with oak leaf cluster and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
