BRIGADIER GENERAL ROSCOE C. CRAWFORD JR. Brigadier General Roscoe Campbell Crawford Jr., is director of operations, North American Air Defense Command, Ent Air Force Base, Colo. The directorate provides policy guidance on the use of air and space defense weapons systems, and directs operation of available air defense forces and systems by all units of the international command. General Crawford was born in Ancon, Canal Zone in 1916. He graduated from high school in Grosse Pointe, Mich., attended the University of Michigan for one year and then was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1939. After completing flight training at Kelly Field, Texas, in June 1940, he was a flying instructor at Randolph Field, Texas, commandant of cadets at the Midland, Texas, Army Air Force Bombardier School and director of training at the San Angelo, Texas, Bombardier School. In 1944 he went to the Thirteenth Air Force in Guadalcanal as director of combat operations and served there, in New Guinea and the Philippines. He flew 10 combat missions in P-38s, B-24s and B-25s before reporting to U.S. Army Air Forces Headquarters as chief of operations analysis in 1945. General Crawford returned to West Point in 1946 as an instructor in military topography and graphics. He was promoted to the rank of colonel in June 1950. In 1951 he went to Athens, Greece, as deputy for operations in the Air Section of the Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group. His next assignment was at Air Training Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., as director of training analysis and development. In February 1955 he became commander of the 3545 Pilot Training Wing at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas. He remained there until August 1957, when he became a student at the National War College, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C. From June 1958 to June 1962, General Crawford was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C., serving as deputy director of operational requirements. In 1962 he went to Clark Air Base in the Philippines as commander of the 405th Fighter Wing. From there, in 1963, he went to Misawa Air Base, Japan, as commander of the 39th Air Division. General Crawford was assigned to NORAD Headquarters in July 1965. He was chief of the Space Defense Center until September, when he was given the additional duty of commanding ADC's 1st Aerospace Control Squadron. In April 1966 he was promoted to brigadier general, and on July 1, 1966, he took over his present assignment as director of operations, NORAD. (Current as of Sept. 1, 1966)
