Four Airmen are nominees for the 2013 Government Employees Insurance Company Military Service Award, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced.

The categories and nominees are as follows:

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Category: Staff Sgt. Johanna M. Ackerberg, 15th Medical Operations Squadron, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. According to the nomination citation, Ackerberg enhanced the awareness of over 1,600 active-duty members by planning and facilitating Alcohol Awareness Month. Ackerberg distributed information, offered alcohol screeners, and plotted the “That Guy” campaign thus enhancing 15th Wing outreach capabilities. Her initiative decreased wing alcohol and drugs cases 15 percent, wing officials said.

Fire Safety and Fire Prevention Category: Tech. Sgt. Daniele L. Flick, 48th Civil Engineer Squadron, Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England. Flick led the fire prevention program, which spanned an area of five million square feet, protecting 15,000 base personnel and $3 billion in Air Force assets, according to his nomination citation. His dedication to fire safety ensured quality inspections to 405 facilities which identified 737 deficiencies and validated 594 corrective actions. His commitment to perfection led his team to capturing the Air Force Fire Prevention Program of the Year for 2012, his commander said.

Traffic Safety and Accident Prevention Category: Staff Sgt. Dwight C. Schweiger, 36th Security Forces Squadron, Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. Schweiger organized the 2013 police week events with the Guam Police Department, while coordinating seven other events to honor fallen police officers worldwide. Additionally, Schweiger taught drug education to 1,119 children through the Drug Awareness and Resistance Program. According to his nomination citation, Schweiger’s mentorship was key in the operations flight winning the 36th Wing Team of the Quarter and the 36th Mission Support Group 2012 Team of the Year.

AFRC/ANG All Categories: Senior Master Sgt. Scott M. Tontegode, 155th Air Refueling Wing, Nebraska Air National Guard, Lincoln, Neb. Tontegode created a safe ride home program which provided members an alternative to driving under the influence and helped sustain the base goal of zero alcohol-related vehicle mishaps, as noted in the nomination citation. He also streamlined a process to provide members access to motorcycle training at no cost to the member. Over 50 riders have completed courses resulting in low mishap rates, even as ridership has significantly increased.

GEICO will select recipients in each category from all nominees submitted by each of the military services. Those recipients will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., next spring.
