First AF reservist assumes role as AF assistant vice chief
Lt. Gen. Stayce D. Harris received her new rank during a promotion ceremony Aug. 26 at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. Former Women Airforce Service Pilot Pauline Cutler-White and retired Col. Charles McGee, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, helped pin on the new rank. Harris is the Air Force's first black female lieutenant general, and also the first reservist to fill the position of the assistant vice chief of staff and director of the air staff.

Bold dreams propel war-torn child to AF flight engineer
Growing up, Master Sgt. Kristofer Reyes and his cousins would use rubber and rocks from a nearby recycling center and create games. He was born to a poor family in Luzon, Phillipines. His parents divorced when he was 2 years old and his mom moved to the U.S. That left him and his siblings stuck in poverty, with only access to one meal a day coming from their village’s Christian school. Reyes got his first toothbrush when he was 9; yet he hasn’t required much dental work.

A time to tell: A lesbian couple’s story
Before 2011, the “don't ask, don't tell” law kept many in the dark. If a service member was gay, they held on to that secret tighter than a tourniquet on the battlefield, or risked discharge. "When ‘don't ask, don't tell' was repealed, for everyone else it was just another day, like 'Oh, it’s OK now.' For me, it was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders and I could completely be myself," said Shayna Engle, an Air Force inactive reservist.
