For Airmen who want to continue serving their country, but can no longer commit to a monthly or annual schedule, the Civil Air Patrol Reserve Assistance Program may be their next career move. The program, CAPRAP, utilizes officer and enlisted Reserve Airmen as liaisons between local CAP squadrons and the Air Force.

Default Air Force Logo Civil Air Patrol joins total force ‘Airmen’
When conducting missions for the Air Force as the official Air Force auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol is now included in the Air Force’s definition of the total force. CAP has provided 74 years of support to emergency services, aerospace education and cadet programs.

As a first lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol on Kadena Air Base, Chance Sheek is an emergency services training officer, communications officer, and he oversees all of the cadet training. But during the weekday, he is a senior airman assigned to the 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron working as a vehicle operations vehicle operator.

Field was a mechanized reconnaissance veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded shortly after in 1945. After being discharged from the Army, Field started the first post-World War II Civil Air Patrol units in Binghamton, New York, and served in the CAP for more than 30 years, contributing to the success of the CAP today. Field received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award for his service during World War II as a member of the CAP. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest ranking civilian award. Joining a prestigious list of recipients, the U.S. House of Representatives' voted on May 19, to award the Civil Air Patrol the Congressional Gold Medal for its volunteer service during World War II, when more than 120,000 members volunteered to support the military effort and help keep the nation secure. Long-time Colorado Springs resident Wayne Field is one of the surviving members to receive this honor.

Some seven decades later, though, they’re receiving it, thanks to the U.S. House of Representatives’ voice vote Monday afternoon to award CAP a Congressional Gold Medal for its volunteer service during the war, when more than 120,000 members stepped up to support the military effort and help keep the nation secure.
