Major General Robert L. Edge was appointed assistant chief of staff, communications and computer resources, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Sept. 12, 1975. He is responsible for setting the policy and direction for U.S. Air Force exploitation of computers and communications.

General Edge was born in 1925 in Los Angeles, Calif., graduated from the Golden Gate Academy in Berkeley, Calif., in 1942, and entered the U.S. Army Air Forces as a private in 1943. He completed Aviation Cadet Training and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1945.

General Edge draws from a wide range of military experience, both operational and technical. During 1945 and 1946, he was assigned to the Air Weather Service and served first with the 59th Reconnaissance Squadron at MacDill Field, Fla., and later with Air Weather Reconnaissance Unit 1-57 on the Marshall Islands.

In 1947 he joined the 19th Bombardment Group on Guam, where he served as a B-29 navigator/radar operator, with additional duties as base provost marshal and group intelligence officer.

General Edge's next assignments were with Strategic Air Command, serving nine years with the 2d Bombardment Wing at Hunter Air Force Base, Ga., and three years at Headquarters SAC. While with the wing, he was aircraft commander of a SAC B-50 lead crew, then a B-47 select crew, an instructor pilot, standardization board evaluator and squadron operations officer. At Headquarters SAC, he was senior command post controller and, later, project officer for the SAC Post Attack Command Control System, which includes the SAC Airborne Command Post.

After attending Stanford University from January 1963 to December 1964 under the Air Force Institute of Technology Program, General Edge was assigned to the Air Force Systems Command, with duty at Headquarters Electronic Systems Division, L.G. Hanscom Field, Mass. During this three-year tour, he served successively as system program director for the Headquarters U.S. Air Force Command Control System and the U.S. Air Force Spacetrack Program.

After completing the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University Business Administration School in June 1968, General Edge became a staff assistant for communications-electronics in the Office of the Director of Defense Research and Engineering, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Washington, D.C.

General Edge was assigned to the Air Force Communications Service in 1969 and, for the following two years, served first as commander of the Central European Communications Region at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and later as deputy chief of staff, plans and programs, at Headquarters Air Force Communications Service, Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Mo.

In July 1971, he was transferred to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C., where he was assigned as deputy director and then director of command control and communications for the four years preceding his present appointment.

General Edge has attended Compton College, Calif.; Washington State University; and Armstrong College, Savannah, Ga. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Omaha and a master's degree in electronic engineering from Stanford University.

He is a command pilot, with almost 6,000 flying hours as a radar-navigator-bombardier and a pilot in B-29s, B-50s and B-47s.

He was promoted to the grade of major general effective July 1, 1971.
