BRIGADIER GENERAL ADRIAN W. TOLEN Brigadier General Adrian Woodrow Tolen is staff judge advocate for Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md. In this capacity he provides legal advice on procurement, patent, labor relations, personnel and fiscal problems; and supervises the administration of military justice and claims programs in the command. General Tolen was born in Ord, Neb., in 1914. He graduated from Ord High School in 1932 and entered the University of Nebraska which he attended until 1936. In June 1936, upon being commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry through the Reserve Officer Training Corps, he entered on active duty under the Thomasson Act and served a year with the 3rd U.S. Infantry at Fort Snelling, Minn. In July 1937, he was detailed to duty with the Civilian Conservation Corps and served as a subaltern and company commander until 1939, when he returned to the University of Nebraska for his second year of law school. In June 1940, General Tolen was ordered to active duty with Headquarters VII Corps Area, at Omaha, Neb., where he was assistant personnel officer, and later commander of the Omaha Induction Station. In May 1941 he was detailed to duty with the Army Air Corps at Lowry Field, Colo., where he commanded the 365th and 25th School Squadrons. After graduation from the Adjutant General's School in April 1942, he was assigned as base personnel officer at the Army Air Forces Technical Training Command's Basic Training Center, Fresno, Calif., and then at the command's headquarters. General Tolen attended the Air Staff Officers Course and the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and graduated in January 1944. Assigned to the B-29 program, he served as a personnel officer in Headquarters Second Air Force, and as assistant chief of staff, personnel, for the 17th Bomb Wing and the VIII Bomber Command until January 1946 when he returned to civilian life. In August 1946, General Tolen graduated from the College of Law at the University of Nebraska and received a bachelor of laws degree. He engaged in the general practice of law in Montrose, Colo., where he remained until July 1947, when he received a Regular Army commission in the Judge Advocate General's Department and returned to active duty at Mitchel Field, N.Y. General Tolen transferred to the Air Force and from November 1947 through June 1949 was Staff Judge Advocate of the Twentieth Air Force on Guam. He was then assigned to Fifth Air Force in Japan as staff judge advocate where he served until June 1950. Upon his return to the United States, General Tolen served as Staff Judge Advocate, Fourteenth Air Force, Robins Air Force Base, Ga., until July 1953. He was then transferred to Headquarters U.S. Air Force for duty in the Office of the Judge Advocate General as chief, Appellate Defense Counsel. He later was chairman of a board of review. After attending the Air War College in 1956-1957, General Tolen was assigned to the Strategic Air Command as staff judge advocate of Fifteenth Air Force at March Air Force Base, Calif. In 1960 he was reassigned to Headquarters Air Defense Command at Colorado Springs, Colo., as staff judge advocate and senior legal adviser to the commander in chief of the North American Air Defense Command. He has been in his present assignment at Air Force Systems Command since April 24, 1963. General Tolen is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the Supreme Court of Colorado, and the U.S. Court of Military Appeals. He is a member of Phi Alpha Delta professional legal fraternity, the Federal Bar Association, and has been active in the Elks Lodge and Lions Club. Military decorations awarded General Tolen include the Legion of Merit and the Air Force Commendation Medal. (Current as of Feb. 15, 1967)
