BRIGADIER GENERAL JONAH LEBELL

Brigadier General Jonah Lebell is staff judge advocate of the U.S. Air Force Logistics Command with headquarters at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He has served in this capacity since August 1967.

General Lebell was born in 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he graduated from New Utrecht High School. He earned his bachelor of laws degree at New York Law School, New York City, in 1937, continued his studies at St. John's University (School of Law), Brooklyn, and graduated with a master in laws degree in 1939. He enlisted in the Army Air Forces in April 1943 and was a contracting and legal clerk at various installations until he was released from active duty in April 1946.

General Lebell remained an enlisted member of the Reserve forces until he accepted a direct commission as first lieutenant in March 1948 and was assigned to the office of the Air Force Judge Advocate General, Washington, D.C. He became assistant chief of the Legislative Drafting Division and also served as chairman of the Military Justice Board of Review and was a member of the judge advocate general's Litigation Division.

In January 1953 he was given overseas duty as the staff judge advocate for the Far East Air Logistics Force based at Tachikawa, Japan. He returned to the United States in August 1955 to perform SJA duty with Headquarters Air Research and Development Command at Baltimore, Md., and later at Andrews Air Force Base, Md.

From January 1958 to December 1960 General Lebell was assigned as SJA at Headquarters Mobile Air Materiel Area, Brookly Air Force Base, Ala. He moved to Norton Air Force Base, Calif., in January 1961 to be SJA for the Ballistic Missiles Center there. In September 1964 he returned to the Washington, D.C., area to serve as assistant counsel with the Contract Administration Service of the Defense Supply Agency at Cameron Station, Va.

In July 1966 he accepted another overseas assignment, this time to Europe. He became SJA for Headquarters Seventeenth Air Force at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. In August 1967 he was appointed to the position of staff judge advocate for Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

He was promoted to the temporary grade of brigadier general effective Oct. 16, 1968, with date of rank Oct. 16, 1968.
