BRIGADIER GENERAL WENTWORTH GOSS

Wentworth Goss was born in Peoria, Ill., in 1903. He graduated from high school in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1921, and attended the University of Southern California.

Appointed a flying cadet in March 1925, General Goss entered Primary Flying School at Brooks Field, Texas, graduated from Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas, March 14, 1926, and was appointed a second lieutenant in the Air Reserve. Called to active duty in July 1927, he was assigned to the 91st Observation Squadron at Crissy Field, Calif., and on June 7, 1928, he received his regular commission as a second lieutenant of Air Corps. In September 1929 he became an instructor at the Primary Flying School, March Field, Calif.

Going to the Philippine Islands in December 1930, General Goss served with the 28th Bomb Squadron at Nichols Field, and the next March he joined the Third Pursuit Squadron at Clark Field. In February 1933, he was assigned to the 19th Bomb Group, serving at Rockwell and March fields in California, becoming aide to the commanding general of the First Wing at March Field in September 1927.

Two years later he entered the Air Corps Tactical School at Maxwell Field, Ala., graduated three months later, and assumed command of Headquarters Squadron at General Headquarters Air Force, Langley Field, Va., as well as serving as aide to the commanding general of General Headquarters Air Force. He was named chief of the Fighter Division in the Office of the Director of Air Defense at Air Corps Headquarters in March 1942.

Ordered to Hickam Field, Hawaii, in November 1942 General Goss was deputy chief of staff of the Seventh Air Force, and the following July he was named Air Force plans officer on the staff of the commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean area. In November 1945, he was appointed chief of staff of the First Air Force at Mitchel Field, N.Y. The following June, he became deputy commander of Hamilton Field, Calif., assuming command of it two months later.

Joining the Air Transport Command in November 1947, General Goss was chief of the Manpower Board at ATC headquarters, Washington, D.C., becoming inspector general, ATC, in May 1948 (redesignated Military Air Transport Service the following month). He was appointed chief of staff, MATS, in August 1949, and assumed command of the 1602nd Air Transport Wing, MATS, in Germany in July 1952.

Three years later, General Goss assumed command of the 3310th Technical Training wing, Air Training command at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

His decorations include the Legion of Merit. He is rated a command pilot, combat observer and aircraft observer.
