Brigadier General Charles E. Fox Jr., is deputy commander of the Canadian North American Aerospace Defense Command Region, Canadian Forces Base, North Bay, Ontario. He also is commander of the 4722nd Support Squadron, Tactical Air Command, and is the senior U.S. military officer assigned to Canada.

General Fox was born in 1941, in Winchester, Ky., and graduated from Winchester High School. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Denison University in 1963 and a master of business administration degree from the University of Utah in 1972. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1974, Air Command and Staff College in 1976, and Air War College in 1982.

The general entered the Air Force in September 1963 after receiving his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Denison University. He earned pilot wings at Webb Air Force Base, Texas, in October 1964. His initial assignment was with the 306th Bombardment Wing, McCoy Air Force Base, Fla., where he spent the majority of his time on temporary duty assignments, flying KC-135 missions in Southeast Asia.

From October 1967 to October 1968 he flew with the 38th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, as a rescue crew commander. He then was assigned as an EC-135 squadron pilot with the 7120th Airborne Command and Control Squadron, Royal Air Force Station Mildenhall, England. General Fox transferred to Ramstein Air Base, West Germany, in 1970 and was selected to command the Operating Location-J 7300 Materiel Squadron that supported the Army's missile deployment for the European theater. In July 1973 he became the base traffic management officer at Langley Air Force Base, Va., flying T-39s to maintain flying proficiency.

General Fox then was assigned to the 6th Airborne Command and Control Squadron at Langley Air Force Base as an instructor pilot, standardization and evaluation flight examiner, and assistant operations officer. In April 1978 he transferred to Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., where he served as operations officer, 4th Airborne Command and Control Squadron, 28th Bombardment Wing, flying EC-135s. In May 1980 he was selected as commander of the wing's 28th Air Refueling Squadron.

From August 1981 to May 1982 General Fox attended the Air War College and then was assigned as inspector general at Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, Robins Air Force Base, Ga. He became deputy base commander at Robins in November 1982 and was assigned as chief of the Resources Management Division, Directorate of Maintenance, in August 1983. In June 1984 he became commander of the 2750th Air Base Wing, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In July 1987 he became vice commander of the Ogden Air Logistics Center, Hill Air Force Base, Utah. He assisted in the logistics management of the entire force of intercontinental ballistic missiles; two major aircraft systems, the F-4 and F-16; and several worldwide defense programs.

He was assigned to North American Aerospace Defense Command, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Base, Colo., as a command director in September 1989, and was appointed vice director of combat operations in June 1990. He assumed his present position in September 1990.

The general is a command pilot with more than 5,000 flying hours. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters, Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with six oak leaf clusters, Combat Readiness Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four service stars, Air Force Overseas Ribbon-Short, Air Force Overseas Ribbon-Long with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with four oak leaf clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

He was promoted to brigadier general July 1, 1988, with same date of rank.
