Brigadier General ERNEST HAYWOOD BEVERLY

Ernest Haywood Beverly entered military service as an aviation cadet at Randolph Field, Texas, in February 1937 and was commissioned a second lieutenant the next year. His first assignment was with the 8th Pursuit Group at Langley Field, Va. In January 1941, he was transferred with the 36th Pursuit Group to Losey Field, Puerto Rico, where he flew P-39 and P-40 fighters. In December 1941 he was assigned to the 51st Fighter Squadron, France Field, Canal Zone, as a P-40 squadron commander. In September 1942, General Beverly became commander of the 37th Pursuit Group at Howard Field, Canal Zone.

In July 1943, General Beverly returned to the United States to attend Command and General Staff School at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., and upon completion was named commander of the 83rd Fighter Group at Dover Field, Del. In July 1944 he was assigned commander of the 325th Fighter Group, "Checkertails," in Italy. This group was one of three P-52 groups of the famed 306th Fighter Wing, Fifteenth Air Force.

On his return to the United States, General Beverly was assigned to the Organization and Training Division, G-3, War Department General Staff. He assumed command of the 4th Fighter Group at Andrews Field, Md., in March 1947. During the Korean War, General Beverly commanded the 51st Fighter Wing and later the 8th Fighter Bomber Wing which was equipped with F-86 aircraft.

Following Korea he held various command and staff positions, including Air Force member of the Military Studies and Liaison Division, Weapons System Evaluation Group, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense; commander, 9th Air Division (Defense) and Washington Air Defense Sector.

In August 1961, General Beverly assumed command of the 39th Air Division (Pacific Air Forces) at Misawa Air Base, Japan. Two years later he arrived at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, to assume duties as assistant chief of staff, operations, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces. On Nov. 1, 1964, he became director of operations, Pacific Air Forces.
