Maj. Gen. Clyde F. Autio is mobilization assistant to the assistant chief of staff for intelligence, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.
General Autio was born in 1931, in Lead, S.D., where he graduated from high school in 1949. He studied engineering at Oklahoma A&M College for two years prior to entering the Air Force. He received a bachelor of science degree in 1959 and a master of science degree in aerospace engineering in 1960, both from the Air Force Institute of Technology. The general is a 1976 honors graduate of Air War College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. In addition, he has completed numerous military courses in the areas of intercontinental ballistic missiles and systems engineering.
He enlisted in the Air Force as an aviation cadet in 1953. Upon graduation from pilot training as a distinguished graduate, he served as a B-26 pilot and personnel officer with the 6th Tow Target Squadron, Johnson Air Base, Japan. After completing graduate school at the Air Force Institute of Technology, he was assigned to the Atlas Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Site Activation Task Force for Offutt and Lincoln Air Force bases, Neb., from August 1960 to August 1962. He then served at the San Bernardino Air Materiel Area, Norton Air Force Base, Calif., as the Atlas weapon systems service engineer.
In December 1963 the general was released from active duty and entered Air Force civilian employment as a ballistic systems engineer with the Foreign Technology Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, which prevented him from participating in the active Reserve until April 1973. The general then joined the Reserve and was assigned to the Aeronautical Systems Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as an aeronautical engineer. In November 1974 he transferred to the Air Force Intelligence Service at Fort Belvoir, Va., as an executive support staff officer, with additional duty as an Air Force Academy liaison officer. He then served as commander, Detached Training Site 2, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
From April 1980 to March 1981 he served as director, Central Area, Air Force Intelligence Service. During this tour of duty, he was selected as the outstanding liaison officer coordinator in the nation for 1978. He became mobilization assistant to the commander, Electronic Security Command, Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, in April 1981. In May 1985 he became mobilization assistant to the assistant chief of staff for intelligence at Air Force headquarters. In October 1986 he was called to extended active duty as deputy assistant chief of staff for intelligence, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., and commander, Air Force Intelligence Service, Fort Belvoir. He returned to his present duties in April 1987.
The general is a senior pilot. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Airman's Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal with service star, Air Force Longevity Service Award with seven oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with two hourglass devices and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.
In his civilian capacity General Autio was an aerospace engineer with the Air Force Foreign Technology Division, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where he directed the reliability and maintainability assessments and special study projects on foreign aircraft systems. He serves as a management consultant and director of program development for Wilberforce University, a historic black university, and the Greene County Board of Mental Health.
His civic affiliations include Tau Beta Pi (engineering honorary society); life member, Reserve Officers Association; Association of Graduates of the Air Force Institute of Technology; life member, Air Force Association; Professional Engineers of Ohio; Association of Old Crows; Airlifters Association; Security Service Alumni Association; member of Greene county Board of Mental Health; member of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Hospital Consumer Advisory Board; National Rifle Association; and Miami Valley Military Affairs Association.
He was promoted to major general April 17, 1987, with same date of rank.
