Volunteers form critical link in the 'care chain'

A UH-60 Blackhawk crewmember with the Texas National Guard's 2-149th General Support Aviation Battalion accompanies Mike Zajicek and Capt. Hunter Letchman as they wheel a patient through Hero's Highway and into the emergency room at Joint Base Balad, Iraq, Oct. 22. The patient was aeromedically evacuated to Balad via a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter. Mr. Zajicek, a facility inspector with the 402nd Army Field Support Brigade, is deployed from the Army Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., and has approximately 300 volunteer hours. Capt. Letchman, the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing deputy chief of flight safety, is deployed from Columbus Air Force Base, Miss., and has approximately 20 volunteer hours.
