Airmen prepare Afghanistan camp for new living quarters

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan (AFPN) --  Airmen from the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing have been volunteering their spare time to help clean up an area of Camp Cunningham here in order to make room for a living condition upgrade.

Camp Cunningham Airmen currently reside in B-Huts, which have lasted beyond their original expectancy, and plan to relocate the B-Huts to a cleared off area of the camp to make way for sturdier relocatable buildings.

While the displaced Airmen may experience a few growing pains or inconveniences, this project is aimed at the long-term improvement of Airmen's living conditions while stationed here.

"As of right now, we're starting off with 18 of the huts to relocate," said Chief Master Sgt. Russ Pollard, the 455th Expeditionary Mission Support Group chief enlisted manager and Camp Cunningham mayor.

"We've been working on this every day for the last few weeks," Chief Pollard said. "One of our biggest hurdles has been the moving of the barriers at the edge of the camp. The solution is to have our civil engineering folks assist with the moving."

"We've had outstanding show of effort for sandbag removal, but there is more to come. This is just phase one of the project," the chief said. "We've got a deadline of June 15 to move the first of the B-Huts."

While the clean-up effort has only been going on for a few weeks, enough Airmen have volunteered and the clean-up is nearly complete.

The 18 selected B-Huts will be moved to the cleared off area of the camp while the new relocatable buildings will be placed in the B-Huts' original spots.
