Air Force exploring renewable energy sources

MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan (AFNEWS) --  Air Force officials are investigating the use of renewable energy like wind, solar and geothermal source for use in the future as an alternative to petroleum said the assistant secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment and Logistics. 

William C. Anderson believes changes to how energy is supplied will change in the future, but he said it is hard to predict what the prominent source of energy is going to be a dozen years from now. 

The need for Airmen being committed to finding new ways to reduce the demand for energy won't change, he said. Helping out can be as simple as turning off your monitor or thinking about Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st century.

"People should speak up about how to improve our processes," Mr. Anderson said. The people who do the job every day are the ones who understand where waste is and know the issues. They can help figure out ways to improve energy conservation.

"Every Airmen can use AFSO 21 every day to improve their job and improve the way we function in the Air Force," Mr. Anderson said. 

Mr. Anderson is going to represent the United States at a global aviation conference in Thailand next week. One of the items he will talk about is the Air Force energy program, and how the Air Force is trying to find new sources of energy and ways to conserve.
